Winter Driving Tips for Western NC

Western North Carolina's mountain roads are beautiful—but they demand respect in winter. Here's what we've learned from decades of driving (and insuring drivers on) these roads.

Know Your Trouble Spots

Some areas are consistently more dangerous in winter conditions:

  • Soco Gap (US-19): The highest point between Waynesville and Maggie Valley. Often icy when lower elevations are clear.
  • Highway 107 to Cashiers: Elevation changes mean conditions can vary dramatically. The Cashiers plateau often gets snow when Sylva doesn't.
  • Blue Ridge Parkway: Closed during winter weather for good reason. Don't try to sneak through closed gates.
  • I-40 at the Tennessee line: The climb to the state line can be treacherous. Watch for trucks struggling on hills.
  • Bridges and overpasses: Always freeze first. The bridge on US-74 near Dillsboro is notorious.

Essential Winter Driving Tips

Before You Drive

  • Check conditions: DriveNC.gov and NCDOT's Twitter are your friends. When in doubt, wait it out.
  • Clear your entire vehicle: Not just the windows—clear snow from your roof, hood, and lights. Flying snow blinds other drivers.
  • Check your tires: Good tread depth is crucial. Consider all-season tires rated for snow (look for the mountain/snowflake symbol).
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full: Adds weight for traction and ensures you won't run out if stuck in traffic.

While Driving

  • Slow down: This is the single most important thing. Speed limits are for ideal conditions.
  • Increase following distance: Give yourself 8-10 seconds behind the car ahead, not the usual 3-4.
  • Brake gently: Smooth, gradual braking. If you have ABS, press firmly and let it do its job.
  • Don't use cruise control: You need full control of your speed on slick roads.
  • Use low gears on hills: Engine braking helps control speed going downhill. Don't ride your brakes.
  • Watch for black ice: Most common on bridges, in shadows, and early morning. If the road looks wet but it's below freezing, assume ice.

Keep an Emergency Kit

Every mountain driver should keep these in their car from November through March:

  • Blanket or sleeping bag
  • Flashlight with fresh batteries
  • Phone charger (portable battery pack)
  • Snacks and water
  • Ice scraper and small shovel
  • Jumper cables
  • First aid kit
  • Warm gloves and hat (even if you don't wear them normally)

If You Slide

It happens to everyone eventually. Here's what to do:

  • Don't panic or slam the brakes
  • Take your foot off the gas
  • Steer in the direction you want to go (not where you're sliding)
  • If you have ABS, brake firmly—don't pump
  • If you don't have ABS, brake gently to avoid locking up

Insurance Considerations

Winter accidents happen even to careful drivers. Make sure your coverage is adequate:

  • Comprehensive coverage covers weather damage, fallen trees, and ice/hail damage
  • Collision coverage covers you if you slide into something
  • Roadside assistance can be a lifesaver if you get stuck

When to Just Stay Home

Sometimes the smartest driving decision is not to drive. If DOT is advising against travel, listen. No errand is worth your safety.

Stay safe out there, neighbors.
