Welcome to the Mountains!

Whether you're relocating from Florida, retiring from up north, or moving here for work, Western North Carolina is a special place. But living in the mountains comes with some unique considerations when it comes to insurance.

Deadlines You Need to Know

North Carolina gives you 60 days after establishing residency to:

  • Register your vehicle with the NC DMV
  • Get a North Carolina driver's license
  • Update your car insurance to an NC policy

Don't wait until day 59—give yourself time to handle any issues that come up.

Car Insurance Requirements

North Carolina requires:

  • 30/60/25 liability coverage ($30k bodily injury per person, $60k per accident, $25k property damage)
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage at the same limits

These are minimums. We typically recommend higher limits, especially if you're coming from a state with different requirements. Learn more about NC requirements →

What's Different About Mountain Driving?

If you're coming from flat terrain, mountain driving requires some adjustment:

  • Deer are everywhere — We strongly recommend comprehensive coverage
  • Weather changes fast — Sunny in Waynesville can mean fog on Soco Gap
  • Winter is real — Even if you moved from up north, our mountain roads are tricky
  • Two-lane roads — Most of WNC isn't highway driving

Home Insurance Considerations

Buying a home in Western NC? Here's what to think about:

Flood Insurance

Standard home insurance doesn't cover floods. If you're near a river or creek (Pigeon, Tuckasegee, etc.), you may need separate flood coverage. Learn more about flood insurance →

Mountain-Specific Risks

  • Trees falling on structures (we have a lot of trees and a lot of storms)
  • Steep driveways and winter access issues
  • Well and septic systems (common outside town limits)
  • Wildfire risk in some areas

Vacation Rental Plans?

Thinking of renting your place on Airbnb? You'll need additional coverage. Learn about vacation rental insurance →

Why Work With a Local Agent?

You could buy insurance online, but here's what you'd miss:

  • We know which roads flood, which areas have deer problems, and where trees come down
  • We can explain how NC differs from your previous state
  • When you have a claim, you call us—not an 800 number
  • We're your neighbors, and we'll be here when you need us

Your Moving Checklist

  1. Get NC car insurance (we can help)
  2. Visit the DMV for license and registration
  3. Update your address with your mortgage company
  4. Review your home insurance for mountain-specific coverage
  5. Consider flood insurance if near water
